Suzuki Vitara SUV facelift unveiled

Suzuki has taken the wraps off its refreshed Vitara SUV for the international market. The facelift model is likely to be named the Vitara Series II in a few markets, like Australia.

The new Suzuki Vitara is now fitted with two new turbo-petrol drivetrains, with 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre displacements. These engines replace the 1.6-litre petrol mill that powered the old, pre-facelift model.

The Suzuki Vitara facelift with the 1.0-litre petrol engine churns out 110hp; meanwhile, the 1.4-litre petrol powertrain delivers 140hp.

There will be no diesel engine option available on the updated Vitara, globally.

In addition to this revised engine line-up, the Vitara facelift gets a subtle refresh in exterior styling as compared to its predecessor – with revised light clusters, grille and bumper at the front, as well as more intricate tail-lights at the rear.

Inside, higher-quality materials have been used on the dashboard, while a colour screen is now fitted to the redesigned instrument cluster.

The car's safety equipment has been given a boost, as well. The higher trim now gets standard automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and assistance, traffic-sign recognition, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Suzuki Vitara is the company’s flagship SUV and has also been spotted in India more than once undergoing tests (not to be confused with the Vitara Brezza compact SUV sold in India). The Suzuki Vitara SUV, if launched here, can be a direct rival to the Hyundai Creta and the Mahindra XUV500 in the Indian market.

2018 MSBK Round 2: Rajini claims another podium finish

Rajini Krishnan endured a tumultuous weekend at Round 2 of the Malaysian Superbike Championship, but came through to achieve a top 5 finish in both races, including a second place finish in Race 1.

Having qualified in second position for the first race of the weekend, Rajini started well but was unable to maintain the pace of the leader. Using the stock brakes on his Yamaha R1 race bike, he struggled with brake fade and brought the bike home in second place, fetching him 20 valuable championship points.

Race 2 was even more eventful - Rajini found himself leading the early stages of the race, but his brake issue came back to haunt him. He ran wide at the final corner on lap 3, and this dropped him to fourth place. Rajini had to readjust his brake markers to compensate for his brake issues, and rode strongly to recover to second place by the penultimate lap.

However, a screw came loose on his foot peg and caused a false neutral, causing Rajini to once again run wide off the track and fall back to fourth place, where he eventually finished the race.

The next round of the MSBK Championship will take place from the September 14 to 16, giving Rajini and his team enough time to regroup and find a solution to his unfortunate brake issues.

SCOOP! Tata Harrier to use Hyundai automatic gearbox

That the Tata Harrier SUV - scheduled to go on sale in January 2019 - will use a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine is common knowledge now. What is an interesting development, however, is Tata Motors’ choice of automatic gearbox for the diesel variant of the Harrier. The SUV won’t use Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ nine-speed automatic gearbox (as was widely expected) but will instead get a six-speed auto from Hyundai.

It is understood that the FCA nine-speed auto was proving too expensive for the Harrier project, which has been developed to meet strict cost targets. Notably, FCA’s nine-speed gearbox will make its India debut on the Jeep Compass Trailhawk, towards the end of 2018. Sources tell us Tata Motors has found a good (and cost-effective) match for the 2.0-litre engine in Korean carmaker Hyundai’s six-speed torque converter automatic.

“The Hyundai transmission is well suited to the power and torque characteristics of the 2.0-litre Fiat diesel, and is significantly cheaper than the FCA transmission, so it made more sense for us to use it” said a Tata Motors source. This six-speed automatic presently does duty on the Tucson and a number of other models in Hyundai’s portfolio.

The six-speed auto will be offered on the five-seat, 140hp Harrier, as well as on its as-yet unnamed, seven-seat, 170hp sibling that will go on sale at a later date. Both SUVs will be offered with Tata’s all-wheel drive system, too.

Tata Motors’ decision to give due priority to an automatic transmission option on the Harrier is in line with the steady rise in demand for automatics in India. Interestingly, in the past, demand for the automatic variant of the Hexa exceeded Tata Motors’ internal projections.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz facelift launch on August 20, 2018

The Maruti Ciaz facelift will finally hit Nexa showrooms on August 20, 2018. The refreshed Ciaz was initially expected to see a market launch on August 6, but Maruti had to push the launch event due to another event clashing with the date. A few Nexa dealers have already started taking bookings for the car unofficially, for amounts between Rs 11,000 and Rs 25,000.

In terms of design, the 2018 Ciaz facelift gets a more rounded nose and a smoother grille that merges with the headlights. It gets subtle chrome accents on the grille and larger ones around the new bumper. A welcome upgrade on the Ciaz facelift is the switch to LED headlamps embellished with LED daytime running lights. At the back, except for new inserts for the LED tail-lamps and chrome detailing on the rear bumper, the overall styling remains the same.

On the inside, as reported by us earlier, the car gets a new instrument cluster and multi-info display, a lighter shade for the faux wood trim, an updated infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and new upholstery for the seats and door pads.

Powering the Ciaz facelift will be Suzuki’s new 1.5-litre petrol motor that will replace the current 1.4 petrol. Maruti will also offer this engine on the second-generation Ertiga that'll come to the market later this year. While the engine’s 104hp of power is average by sedan class standards, the 1.5-litre petrol unit will stand out for its SHVS mild-hybrid tech.

The prices for the updated Ciaz are not yet out, but we can tell you that there are good deals currently available on unsold stock of the outgoing, pre-facelift Ciaz. Depending on the location, Nexa dealers are offering discounts ranging from Rs 75,000 to Rs 1.3 lakh on the car.

The Maruti Ciaz takes on the likes of the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Toyota Yaris.

2019 Ducati Diavel details emerge

Around two weeks ago, we told you that Ducati was working on a sportier new Diavel for 2019. More details have now emerged about it and like its sibling, the XDiavel, it will be available in two variants – 1260 and 1260 S. The S will also feature top-of-the-line Ohlins suspension, multiple rider aids with a six-axis IMU and even Bluetooth connectivity.

From previously leaked spy shots, it could be seen that the new Diavel has redesigned bodywork that echoes the theme seen on the current XDiavel. Proof of this can be seen in the LED headlight as well as the twin-pipe exhaust set-up on the test mule – they both appear similar to the ones on the XDiavel.

Called Project 1309, the next-gen Diavel uses the engine as a stressed member in the frame and is combined with fully-adjustable Ohlins suspension for the first time. The 1260 S also boasts Brembo Monoblock brakes and a wide rear wheel that can accommodate a 240-section rear tyre. The standard model, meanwhile, will ride on Marzocchi suspension.

Ducati’s project manager, Eugenio Gherardi, was quoted saying, “The whole idea is to move the bike away from the values of the XDiavel and to make the machine sportier. So the suspension is much better quality and the rake is steeper, going from 28 to 27 degrees. The frame is all-new and though the wheelbase is 15mm longer (1600mm), the bike is a lot more nimble.”

The big Ducati is expected to be powered by the company’s 1,262cc, liquid-cooled L-Twin motor that debuted in the XDiavel and then made its way to the Multistrada 1260. Reports suggest that this motor will be tuned to make a little less than 160hp on this bike. In comparison, this motor makes 152hp and 126Nm of torque on the XDiavel and 158hp and 129.5Nm of torque on the new Multistrada 1260.

As with the current Diavel, the foot pegs on this motorcycle are placed in a more sporty position and are not forward-set like the XDiavel. This, along with the more powerful motor and what looks to be a steeper fork can together form the sportiest Diavel yet. We believe this motorcycle will be sold alongside the XDiavel as a sportier option.

Expect Ducati to unveil the bike fully at the end of the year, mostly during INTERMOT in October or EICMA in November. However, the bike is only likely to hit the roads early next year.

Review: 2018 Skoda Karoq review, test drive

Like the mythical primate it was named after, the Skoda Yeti was a rare and rather unique SUV that captivated owners with its very distinctive and unusual character. But what really earned it a fiercely loyal tribe of followers was the way it drove. Not since the Chevrolet (née Subaru) Forester have we seen an SUV that was an out and out driver’s car. No other SUV has come close to being as satisfying to drive as the Yeti, no matter how good or bad the road surface was. But no matter how brilliant and involving the Yeti was to drive, it was always as rare as...well, a Yeti. There were hardly any takers for it and in the seven years it was on sale in India, Skoda managed to sell under 5,000 Yetis. The problem was that the quirky design – which had hatchback dimensions, a small cabin, an even smaller boot and an upright van-like rear – wasn’t SUV enough for the typical SUV buyer, and not just in India but elsewhere in the world too. So when it was time to replace the Yeti, Skoda took a more conventional approach for its successor – the Karoq.

CONSERVATIVE PARTY

Though bigger in every dimension, the Karoq is far from being a grown-up Yeti, and is more of a scaled-down Kodiaq. That’s a good and bad thing; depending on which faction you belong to. Loyalists will be dismayed to see that the chunky, oddball design, which gave the Yeti its personality, is gone, and, instead, you get a more conventional shape that is more in line with Skoda’s new SUV design language pioneered by the Kodiaq. That’s a good thing for the broader swathe of buyers who will surely appreciate the well-proportioned and sharply cut lines of the Karoq.

In fact, when viewed head-on, it’s hard to distinguish the Karoq from the bigger Kodiaq. The Karoq uses the same design cues as its elder sibling, like the dual-slat grille with the indentation below the Skoda logo, the slim headlights with tiny fog lamps stacked below it and the full-width air intake in the lower bumper. It’s when you look closely that you can see the difference in the details. And design details are what the Karoq abounds with. Skoda has used the VW Group’s expertise of producing body panels with sharply drawn creases to the full. The ‘pinched’ shoulder line, chiselled wheel arches and superbly sculpted tailgate, with a unique looking tail-light design, give the Karoq lots of character. It’s nowhere near as distinctive as the Yeti but is a handsome SUV all the same, and that is sure to find almost universal appeal. And those 19-inch Crater wheels look just stunning.

Based on the VW Group’s universal MQB platform that underpins a wide range of models, the Karoq benefits from the same mechanicals used in other compact SUVs from the Group. It gets MacPherson struts up front and a four-link rear axle (for the four-wheel-drive variant), while front-wheel-drive models get a basic torsion bar setup at the rear. The Karoq also gets the competent Haldex 4x4 system from the Kodiaq and other Group SUVs, but with a longer wheelbase and greater overhangs than the Yeti; we wonder if it will be as Yeti-like off-road. However, SUV buyers don’t buy SUVs for off-road prowess and the most popular version of the Karoq is likely to be the basic front-wheel-drive version with a DSG automatic gearbox.

Practicality is what owners will certainly want and the Karoq, in true Skoda tradition, has tons of it. You get a large glovebox and lots of generous cubbyholes that can swallow one-litre bottles and other bits and bobs.

The upright seats are the highlight of the cabin. Not only do they give you an elevated view of the road but the high ‘hip-point’ and superb underthigh support makes the Karoq a hugely comfortable place to spend long hours in. Legroom isn’t as generous as the bigger Kodiaq’s, naturally, and two six-footers sitting one behind the other could experience a shortage of knee room, but, with Skoda’s VarioFlex seating system – the same we saw on the Yeti – it’s not an issue. This cleverly designed seating arrangement allows you to slide, recline and even remove each rear seat unit individually. This not only optimises passenger room but frees up luggage space too, which, by the way, is a generous 521 litres with all seats in place. Other clever bits include handy hooks in the boot area to tie down luggage, a sealed trash bin in the driver’s door pocket, rear-facing tablet holders that clip on to the front headrests, a flip-up tray for the rear passenger, and, oh yes, no Skoda is complete without an umbrella which stows neatly under the rear seat.

Top-end variants are expected to be fully loaded and should come with a massive 9.2-inch touchscreen, LED ambient lighting, a 12-speaker audio system, wireless charging for smartphones, a powered tailgate and a huge panoramic sunroof, along with a host of other equipment. The dashboard design is again very Skoda-like, with a mix of strong horizontal and vertical elements and a logical layout for all the controls. All the materials used are top notch and the cabin exudes the same sense of quality you experience in premium Skodas like the Kodiaq and Superb.

PRACTICAL THEORY

The Karoq we tested came the familiar 2.0 TDI diesel engine which develops 150hp and a healthy 340m of torque. It was also equipped with the same six-speed manual we know so well from the Yeti, but, sadly (for enthusiasts), the India-spec car will only get DSG automatic transmission. The truth is that, one of the reasons the Yeti failed in India is because it was never offered with an automatic option, and Skoda doesn’t want to make that mistake again.

Lighter than the Kodiaq by a good 313kg and paired to a manual transmission, the Karoq felt far more sprightly than its seven-seat sibling from the get go. Like most VW Group diesels, this latest TDI motor is extremely responsive, with a strong wave of torque building up from low down in the rev range. There’s a bit of turbo lag initially but it quickly disappears once the tacho needle sweeps past 1,500rpm. The mid-range is particularly punchy, which gives the Karoq great overtaking capability. Once you’re in the meat of the powerband, a slight flex of the foot whisks you forward with ease. It’s when you push north of 4,000rpm that you face some resistance. Power tails off rapidly beyond this point and the engine sounds pretty harsh. In fact, you can hear the distinct diesel drone at high revs, and in the interest of low noise levels, it’s best to keep the engine below the 3,500rpm mark.

The Karoq doesn’t have the agility of the Yeti and is more benign rather than entertaining in the way it handles. The steering is light and fairly accurate but a bit numb when it comes to feel. Engaging Sport mode only makes it heavier and doesn’t improve the steering response. The hefty diesel makes the Karoq a nose-heavy car with a tendency to understeer when pushed hard. Overall, however, it’s a passive and safe SUV to punt around and the tyres offer superb grip.

Riding on 19-inch wheels and 225/45 low-profile tyres, the Karoq’s ride feels a bit brittle over sharp edges. For India, however, we are sure the Karoq will be equipped with 17- or 18- inchers in the interest of ride comfort. On smoother surfaces, the SUV rides superbly, soaking up undulations with a flat poise so as not to disturb its occupants. There’s a satisfying solidity to the way it absorbs dips and bumps, and the suspension too works silently.

The plush and premium Karoq has an underlying tough-as-nails side to it, which makes it desirable and practical at the same time. But the key question that remains unanswered is price. Indications suggest that it won’t be cheap when it goes on sale in the first-half of 2019, but will certainly be priced lower than the Kodiaq. If you don’t need the extra row of seats, the Karoq, in fact, offers almost everything the Kodiaq does at a significantly lower cost.

Sub-500cc Harley-Davidson for India to lead radical new model charge

It’s been a hard few years for Harley-Davidson, with falling sales and, more recently, getting stuck in between trade wars. But the American icon has just made a massive announcement that could very well change the path of its future. There are a lot of exciting announcements here, so we’ll split it up into different sections.

In a nutshell, the company has announced three new modular platforms that will span 500cc to 1250cc. The company will also be launching the road-going Livewire electric motorcycle by August 2019, and many more (smaller and more affordable) models will join the Livewire family in the coming years. What’s most exciting for us is the company’s announcement that it will be developing an affordable, small capacity, 250-500cc bike for India and Asian markets.

This growth plan, tagged the ‘More roads to Harley-Davidson’ span out to the year 2022 and it comes as part of the two-wheeler giant’s intention to launch 100 new motorcycles by 2027. Harley has also given us a sneak-peek into its upcoming offerings which will be launched by 2020; the list includes the Pan America 1250, a 1250cc Custom model and a 975cc Streetfighter model. Sub-500cc Harley-Davidson
After the locally manufactured Street 750 and Street 500 (sold overseas), Harley wants to take its accessibility a notch higher. It has plans to develop a 250cc to 500cc motorcycle for Asia and emerging markets. In its release, the American two-wheeler manufacturer specifically mentioned that this new motorcycle will be an important product for the Indian market. It also mentioned that the sub-500cc Harley-Davidson will be built in alliance with a manufacturer based in Asia.

Not much more has been revealed and the manufacturer says that it will announce more at a further date, but that leaves us free to speculate. Interestingly enough, companies like KTM, BMW and Triumph, who have tie-ups with local manufacturers (Bajaj, TVS and Bajaj respectively) don’t have any local manufacturing presence of their own in India. However, Harley-Davidson has a full-fledged manufacturing plant in Bawal, Haryana, so the specifics of this alliance remain to be seen in terms of how it will work. What the current press-release does mention is that the alliance will include the distribution network so as to allow higher accessibility and market penetration to customers in India and other Asian markets.

As for the motorcycle itself, again, precious little is known at the moment. But given the fact that Harley’s modern range of products has adopted new technology while maintaining its traditional core elements, we are hoping that it will be powered by a V-twin motor. Then again, single-cylinder Harleys have existed in the past so one could argue that they are a part of the brand’s history, too.

Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250
The Pan America 1250 has to be among the most revolutionarily motorcycles that the brand has shown off in this release. The image shared with us is that of the prototype, and has a straightforward and likeable industrial vibe to it that we can’t help but associate with the Royal Enfield Himalayan. Powering the bike is an all-new 1250cc V-twin motor which gets modern features like liquid-cooling and DOHC. The bike also appears to get modern components like LED headlamps, radially mounted brake callipers and an upside down fork. Lending to the rugged appearance are spoke wheels with off-road tyres. If you’re tempted by the idea of a Harley-Davidson adventure tourer, you will have to be patient, as the Pan America 1250 will only be launched in 2020.

Harley-Davidson Streetfighter 975
As the name suggests, the new Streetfighter 975 is a proper naked street motorcycle. With its muscular styling, the Streetfighter 975 looks like the spiritual successor to the XR 1200. The round headlight, chunky fork, sharp fuel tank and mass-forward design are textbook styling elements for a streetfighter.

Powering the Streetfighter 975 will be a new liquid-cooled, 975cc, V-twin motor. As with the Pan America, this engine is also liquid-cooled and uses a DOHC head design. From the teaser video Harley has released, the engine sounds angry and quite quick revving, which is a remarkable departure from the lumpy and lazy-revving engines in most of the brand’s motorcycles. Keeping with tradition, the Streetfighter prototype uses a belt drive mechanism, unlike a chain drive as seen on modern performance bikes. The production version of this new Harley-Davidson offering will be launched in 2020.

In the teaser video, we can also spot Indian designer Chetaan Shedjale working on the sketches. Chetaan is a senior designer at Harley-Davidson and in the past has helped design the Street 750 and the Street Rod.

Harley-Davidson Custom 1250
The upcoming Harley-Davidson Custom 1250 looks like a modern Bobber-styled motorcycle. The new motorcycle looks set to be a modern rival for the Indian Scout range. The retro-modern styling of the Custom 1250 is attention-grabbing and the prototype has also been equipped with a tubular swingarm. It will be sharing its 1250cc, liquid-cooled, V-twin engine with the Pan America 1250, but the motor will be in a different state of tune to suit its characteristics. The Custom 1250, Streetfighter 975 and Pan America all appear to be using brand new frames.

Broader reach
In addition to the new products, Harley intends to boost its online presence with an evolution of the www.harley-davidson.com experience. Further, the brand has revealed that it is looking to establish strategic alliances with global leading e-commerce brands, so the day may not be far when you could buy your Harley off a website like Amazon, for instance. The company is also looking at including smaller urban store fronts to expand brand exposure and also propel apparel sales.

The money matter
Significant investment will be required to fund this enormous strategic plan. Harley says it plans to fund this entire operation completely via 'comprehensive cost reduction and reallocation of previously planned investment and resources, including operating investment through 2022 of $450 to $550 million and capital investment through 2022 of $225 to $275 million'.

With the 'More Roads to Harley-Davidson' plan, the company believes it will generate $1 billion of additional revenue in 2022 as compared to 2017.

2018 Suzuka 8 Hours – Yamaha continues dominant run

Yamaha maintained its dominance at the Suzuka 8 Hours claiming its fourth consecutive win at the prestigious endurance race. It wasn’t an easy win for the Yamaha Factory team, as it was involved in an intense duel with the Kawasaki Team Green. Both the teams set the pace for the race and the turning point came when it started raining before the final stage of the race. Kawasaki rider, Jonathan Rea was caught off guard by the surprise rain showers as he was on the track with slick tyres. As the British rider made his way into the pits to switch to wet tyres, he lost control of his Kawasaki and crashed. This error meant that the Kawasaki Team Green lost time in switching bikes and it also ended its challenge for the win. Kawasaki’s loss was Red Bull Honda’s gain as it got promoted to second place. The Honda riders (Takumi Takahashi, Takaaki Nakagami and Patrick Jacobsen) had good pace in the initial stages and were even leading the race in wet track conditions. However, as the track dried up, the Kawasaki and Yamaha riders upped their pace to make it a two-way duel for the win.

With Kawasaki out of contention, the Yamaha riders (Katsuyuki Nakasuga, Alex Lowes and Michael van der Mark) rode with caution to clinch yet another impressive win. It was also the fourth consecutive triumph for Katsuyuki Nakasuga, which makes him the most successful rider in the endurance race event, upstaging Aaron Slight’s three consecutive win between 1993 and 1995. Coming in fourth position was the Suzuki S-Pulse Dream Racing IAI. The 41^st Suzuka 8 Hours was among the most intriguing races in the recent past. Kawasaki had set the pace throughout the weekend and was the fastest bike on the grid. On the other hand, Yamaha couldn’t match the pace of Kawasaki, but, what the Iwata-based brand had was consistency – an important aspect in endurance racing. However, the final results could have been different, if Rea hadn’t crashed. All said and done, the Japanese fans who braved the treacherous weather conditions did witness a brilliant spectacle of two-wheel racing.

Hamilton storms to Hungarian GP victory

Lewis Hamilton took a commanding, lights-to-flag victory at the Hungaroring to further extend his championship lead. He now heads into the summer break with a 24-points lead over title rival Sebastian Vettel, who survived a late-race incident with Valtteri Bottas to finish second.
Hamilton and Bottas made a clean start, with Vettel passing his teammate Kimi Raikkonen for third place around the outside at Turn 2. Ferrari had opted to split strategies between its two drivers, with Vettel starting the race on soft tyres while Raikkonen, like the rest of the front runners, started on a pair of ultrasofts.
With Raikkonen heading into the pits on lap 14 of 70, and Bottas following him a lap later, Vettel started catching up to Hamilton on his more durable tyres. Hamilton pitted with a lead of over 6.0sec and fell back from Vettel initially, but then used his fresh soft tyres to close the gap to within 10sec before Vettel finally stopped with 31 laps to go. The Ferrari driver was initially on track to leapfrog Bottas after his stop but traffic, combined with a slow pit stop due to a problem with the front-left wheel, resulted in Vettel rejoining the field in third place, and crucially, behind Bottas.
Vettel spent the next 20 laps stuck behind Bottas and could not use his ultrasoft tyres to chase down Hamilton. This, in turn, allowed Raikkonen – who had made a second stop for more softs – to catch up and make it a three-car fight for second.
With just five laps remaining, Vettel pulled off a move on Bottas, passing him on the outside heading to Turn 2. Bottas braked too late as he tried to retain the place on the inside, clipped the inside kerb and hit the back of the Ferrari. He broke his front wing but Vettel somehow continued without damage or a puncture, keeping Raikkonen at bay in the process to finish a distant second behind Hamilton.
Bottas, meanwhile, had to limp his car home on significantly older tyres and front wing damage. This left him susceptible to a charging Daniel Ricciardo, who got a run on him down the start-finish straight with four laps to go. He was passing him around the outside of Turn 1 when Bottas locked up again and clattered into the side of Ricciardo’s Red Bull, damaging its sidepod in the process.
Soon after, Mercedes advised Bottas to let Ricciardo through but he argued against it. But Ricciardo was able to eventually catch up and pass Bottas for fourth place on the final lap. The stewards did hand Bottas a 10-sec penalty for his clash with Ricciardo, but that didn’t change the overall result as he had finished the race 23sec ahead of Pierre Gasly.
Ricciardo’s late race overtake gave Red Bull some consolation after Verstappen suffered a power unit problem early in the race that resulted in a retirement. Kevin Magnussen finished in seventh place, ahead of Fernando Alonso – who jumped a number of cars by extending his first stint.
Stoffel Vandoorne should have made it a double-points finish for McLaren but retired from ninth with a gearbox problem. That promoted Carlos Sainz to ninth, with Romain Grosjean rounding out the top 10 after jumping Brendon Hartley and Nico Hulkenberg with a longer first stint.
The 2018 Formula 1 season will now resume at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on August 24-26, 2018, following the summer break.

Hyundai is evaluating a micro SUV for India, Y.K. Koo, managing director and CEO, Hyundai Motor India has disclosed to Autocar India. The model in question will be positioned under Hyundai’s upcoming Carlino concept-based sub-4m SUV (code: QXI).

"Maybe later, we can introduce a micro SUV that is smaller than the QXI. This would enable us to have a strong SUV line-up comprising of the micro SUV, the sub-4 metre QXI and the Creta and then maybe the Tucson," Koo told Autocar India in an interview.

Hyundai is conducting surveys and studies to ascertain the possible market for the micro SUV, which is not part of its plan to launch eight new products in India by 2020. The new model is said to be a good three-four years away from production, subject to the project getting a green light. Also, a mass volume product like an affordable micro SUV will require additional production capacity as the current plant is running beyond its installed capacity of 700,000 units a year on a three-shift basis. Additional capacity is unlikely to be added before 2020.

Sources at Hyundai hint the carmaker's decision to go ahead with the micro SUV could be based on the response to Maruti Suzuki's own micro SUV - the production version of the Future-S Concept from Auto Expo 2018. Currently under development, this new body style from Maruti (codename: Y1K) will launch in 2020. Rivals for the potential micro SUV from Hyundai will also include the Renault Kwid that can be credited with pioneering the SUV-inspired look in the small car space.

Hyundai has met with tremendous success in the mass market SUV space, with the Creta consistently being a top 10 seller in India right from launch in 2015. A well-received micro SUV could just enhance sales exponentially.

For now, Hyundai has its hands full as it gears up to launch its new small car this festive season.

Review: 2018 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3.0 vs Bajaj Pulsar RS200 comparison

It’s an unruly day as good as they come. Above us, dark clouds are clashing violently, soaking us in a fearsomely cold shower. The ribbon of uphill tarmac ahead of us is impeccable, or so it appears through our rain-smattered visors. There’s only one perfect line through the corner ahead, and only one of us is going to be able to take it. Courtesy? Ha! That’s clearly for another time; this fight has only just begun.

I’m on the Pulsar RS200, Bajaj’s flagship and the only faired motorcycle in its range. It has been around since 2014, and the last noteworthy update came in 2017, with the arrival of the BS-IV norms. To refresh your memory, the RS200 is summarily the faired version of the NS200 which, in turn, is Bajaj’s spin on a very fun motorcycle produced by its Austrian counterpart – the KTM 200 Duke. However, the RS200 is more than just another motorcycle with a lot of bodywork. It’s seriously fast and capable, although it comes without a professional racing pedigree. The RS200, like any Pulsar worth its salt, is born to dominate the streets – ‘Leave track racing to amateurs’, as its original tag line had infamously advertised.

The R15 V3.0 is the polar opposite. Here’s a machine virtually carved out of the asphalt and kerbs of racetracks around the world. It inherits heavily from Yamaha’s legendary racing dominance and that so much has been crammed into a 150cc motorcycle is nothing short of pure genius. Of course, this had been achieved a decade ago when the first-gen R15 made its debut, but that Yamaha has evolved it to offer even more is no small feat either. The R15 V3.0 is a racer’s motorcycle and, going by its utter disregard towards the RS200 (the R15 did take that perfect line first, after all), it wants to win this test.

This contrast in their geneses is evident from the moment you swing a leg over them (one at a time, please!). The Pulsar RS200 seats you nearly upright and its clip-on handlebars are raised enough to serve the function of a conventional tubular handlebar. It’s visually racy but quite comfortable in reality. The seat is seemingly more generous, and the foot pegs are relatively less rear-set compared to the Yamaha. The RS200’s riding geometry serves to put you in control, without adding excessive emphasis on your wrists. This means you have as good a view into and out of corners, without the stress usually associated with cornering-focused machines.

On the R15, you have no such concessions. It’s unforgiving in its sincerity towards racetrack-grade handling, and this is evident from its low-set clip-ons and high-positioned rear-set foot pegs. The R15 is unapologetically focused and its riding geometry suggests you best use it on a racetrack, or at least on a very fast twisty road. Overall, it’s also visibly narrower and more compact than the Pulsar, clearly displaying its affinity to the racing adage ‘less is more’. Underlining this is its 139kg kerb weight, which makes it a jaw-dropping 25kg lighter than the Pulsar. What all of this coalesces into is a machine that’s rewarding but only if you can earnestly commit.

Rishaad is the more earnest of the two of us in matters of track riding and he’s speeding up the enticingly curvy road with sublime precision. The R15 he’s on is powered by a 155cc, liquid-cooled, four-valve motor, and with 19.3hp at 10,000rpm on tap, it’s no surprise how easily the R15’s tail-lights seem to be accelerating between corners of varying radii. On the Pulsar, I have the stronger engine – a 199.5cc, liquid-cooled, four-valve unit which produces 24.5hp at 9,750rpm – but weight (the motorcycle’s and mine) is making life difficult. Where the road straightens up a bit, I use the Pulsar’s stronger motor to narrow the gap, but it’s almost impossible to make a pass. Say, it’s a bit too rainy today, eh? Excuses aside, the R15 has a clear edge in this environment, although the RS200 isn’t out of place here at all.

The R15’s six-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch is undoubtedly the best among any motorcycle in the sub-Rs 2 lakh price bracket and it adds to the urgent, seamless progress. It’s almost clinically precise and refined in its responses, and, I must say, it sounds rather nice when being revved to the limit as well. With a 0-100kph time of 10.73sec, the R15 is amply quick to prove entertaining and, paired to the agile chassis, it makes for a terrific recipe for those with racing aspirations. You can well emulate your Sunday heroes on it, attempting to graze bits of your riding gear (choose wisely) on asphalt, although today, as you can tell by the pictures, wasn’t the best day to try.

The RS200 gets a six-speed gearbox, too, but no slipper clutch. The gearshifts are good but lack a level of obsessive precision. In other words, it is possible to miss a gear under hard acceleration; having said that, it’s fast in a very likeable way. Ridden aggressively, the RS200 is a sensory delight, especially since its impressive acceleration is accompanied by a meaty exhaust note that’s quite unlike the Duke’s polarising acoustics. The RS200’s motor is impressive because it’s not only refined but also noticeably more tractable. Its mid-range is particularly likeable, but what takes the cake is the strong top-end surge it offers, which is addictive. In the real world, it helps you close the gap to more athletic motorcycles, such as the R15 V3.0, for instance.

Despite the conditions, the R15 makes a see-through affair of its capabilities, and its poise and grip-levels come across as ample, to say the least. The RS200 evenly matches it on this front. My last encounter with it was on a dry test track and it established itself as an effortless and nimble motorcycle. Today was no exception. The largely effortless riding position enhances leverage and what it lacks in terms of outright focus it makes up for by being more usable. The RS200 is more accommodating of taller, heavier riders and it’s generally more rider-friendly. On a slightly disconnected note, its projector headlights are better than the R15’s (better-looking) LEDs, which do give it an edge in the dark. Hard cornering is less demanding on the RS, and you can set yourself up for aggressive riding more easily on it. This is amplified when the setting transitions to urban confines (which is where these two motorcycles are more likely to rub shoulders or even be ridden individually); it’s here that the Pulsar really shines.

It’s in the real world that the Pulsar begins to showcase its strengths. Despite being full-faired and of the same format as the R15, it feels almost like a naked streetfighter in its approach, which is just fantastic. The Pulsar doesn’t require you to have track-trained muscle groups (although it helps if you do, in any case), and it has an energy to it that’s empowering and enabling on the road. It is, like all good Pulsars, terrific for point-and-squirt riding and its street usability goes beyond just its motor, thankfully. It has the bigger brakes of the two – a 300mm disc up front and a 230mm disc at the rear – and also offers a single-channel ABS; our test bike, however, was the non-ABS version. The telescopic fork and Nitrox monoshock make for decent suspension characteristics although they lack the damping prowess of the Yamaha. The RS200 is the stiffer sprung of the pair and it’s something you will notice over uneven surfaces. Having said that, it does have the wider, more accommodating pillion seat of the two and to say it’s better suited to touring is to state the obvious. You can tell from the pictures, can’t you?

The R15 isn’t quite versatile. It’s happiest around a circuit or a smooth and winding road, and this is where it really excels. But how long you can enjoy it elsewhere depends on your levels of inclination and fitness. The ergonomics are tailored to suit its purpose, of course, but a majority of enthusiasts don’t live close to a racetrack and riding it on the street can get tiring in not much time. Thankfully, the extent of its impracticality is largely limited to just its riding geometry, since it has better-tuned suspension – a telescopic fork and a linkage-type monoshock – which absorbs undulations admirably well. For a serious (even if on an entry-level scale) handling-focused motorcycle such as this, Yamaha’s decision to leave out ABS is disappointing. The R15’s braking is still impressive, and ABS would only serve to enhance it, given its obvious safety benefits and the additional braking liberties it allows you to take. Lastly, the R15 continues to be a pillion-unfriendly motorcycle, although it is perhaps less so as compared to the outrageous V2.0. While your pillion is less likely to complain about altitude sickness this time around, it’s still not the comfiest seat around. Oddly enough, neither motorcycle boasts a rail for pillions to hold on to; both get integrated ducts which work alright but aren’t as confidence inspiring.

The rain has transitioned violently into a thunderstorm now. The last few hours of riding have been intense but a lot of fun for both of us. Rishaad is impressed with the R15 – and I’m a fanboy, too – but neither of us can deny that the R15 has gotten a bit, well, serious in its evolution. It can still exhilarate but is truly enjoyable only in the right conditions and when you’re fully willing to commit. The Pulsar is more free-spirited in this regard. The evolution of the Pulsar has been a significant one, too, but Bajaj was wise to not put the onus (or even burden, if I may say so) of this elevation on the rider. In other words, it allows you a lack of discipline. No, in fact, the Pulsar encourages it! That’s impossible not to love.

To take a pick is, therefore, simple enough. The Pulsar has a few things going against it – the visibly lower levels of fit and finish, its heavier kerb weight, and an overall design that’s overdone and could have been so much better, to say the least – but a lot going for it in the areas of real-world usage. The R15 costs the princely sum of Rs 100 more, but its list of negatives is longer and has bigger implications on its usability. All things considered, both motorcycles are also for very different audiences. If you live, breathe and sleep MotoGP, you’ve just got to have the R15; it’ll make you feel like one of your heroes. However, if you want to ride fast everywhere, but also do a lot more with your motorcycle, it’s the Pulsar RS200 that’s more deserving of your hard-earned money right now.

Nanjappa and Changappa win 2018 RFC India

After seven grueling days, the 2018 Isuzu Rainforest Challenge (RFC) India reached its conclusion with the final stage (SS26) held at the Rajiv Gandhi IT Habitat in Dona Paula, Goa. Team V5 Offroaders’ Nanjappa and co-driver Chetan Changappa ultimately clinched the title with a points haul of 2,006 out of a maximum 2,600. As the 2018 champions, Nanjappa and Changappa have won an automatic free entry into the 2018 RFC Global Series finale that will be held in Malaysia at the end of the year.

“This is an incredible feeling. I would like to thank my co-driver, my service team and my buddy – the Jeep – all of whom put up a fantastic performance. We enjoyed every moment of this competition, specially the challenging ones. We were prepared for a tougher and more competitive event this time and we knew that we had to maintain the lead from the very start. The conditions of the competition were highly unpredictable and kept varying from contender to contender. In the end, I think these conditions worked in our favor and piloted us to the victory,” said Nanjappa.

The veteran rallyist finally added the RFC India title to the list of his achievements – which include being a nine-time Indian National Rally Riders Champion, a Great Desert Rally Champion, amongst others – on his third attempt at the off-roading competition.

Team G.O.A. Fairmont’s Mervyn Lim and co-driver Alex Tan finished in second place with 1,849 points, while Gerrari Offroaders’ Gurmeet Virdi and co-driver Kirpal Singh Tung claimed the last podium spot with 1,849 points. Meanwhile, Chow Ujjal Namshum and co-driver Ingpeng Mein won the 'Rookie of the Event’ award – the duo completed the event in sixth place on their debut attempt.

2018 Gumball 3000 to begin on August 4

The 2018 edition of the Gumball 3000 rally is expected to see 100 exclusively selected cars participate in the annual celebrity rally, scheduled to take place from August 4 to August 12. The cars will traverse a 3,000-mile (4,828km) route on public roads, starting in London and goes all the way to Tokyo.

Going beyond the luxury automotive tour, the rally stops at famous landmarks in each city, where some of the rarest and most exclusive cars are displayed, along with stunts and performances by petrolheads and music artists. If you tend to travel frequently with your helmet as hand luggage you’ll want to invest in something safer and more convenient to carry it around in than the standard cloth bag that most helmets ship with. This is where the Viaterra helmet bag comes in. It is essentially a helmet-shaped bag with a flat bottom and a decent level of padding all around to protect the helmet from small bumps and impacts. It is quite large and can hold nearly all full-face helmets. It will take an MX helmet, too, if you dismantle the peak. The top of the bag folds down when not in use, making it fairly compact to stow away.

The bag is constructed out of a durable 300D ripstop material and triple-stitching at stress points adds to the toughness quotient. The inside around the visor area is lined with a soft material to avoid scratches and there’s also a mesh pocket at the bottom to store a balaclava or any small items like spare ear plugs, etc. Overall, the materials used are of a high quality and the bag feels reassuringly durable.

The bag closes using a long YKK zipper with dual sliders, extending nearly all the way around the diameter of the helmet, making it easy to get it in and out. You can either carry the bag by a rubberised grab handle at the front or by using the removable shoulder strap. Both feel strong and sturdy, but I’d have liked to see a dual grab handle, one on either side of the zipper, as this will help prevent disaster in the unlikely event of a zipper failure or the more likely case of forgetting to close the zipper in the first place.

At about Rs 2,000, this bag is a little expensive, but I’m happy with the level of protection it offers my helmet. It feels worth the money.

Sahara Force India Academy racer Jehan Daruvala claimed his first victory of the 2018 FIA Formula 3 European Championship, winning Race 1 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. Daruvala started the race from pole position and consolidated his win with a fastest lap as well.

After a poor getaway from pole position in Race 1, Daruvala found himself in third place at the exit of Eau Rouge on lap one. He managed to climb up to second place before a safety car period came into effect, owing to an incident further down the field.

Once racing resumed, Daruvala passed Alex Palou for the lead, and then pulled away to achieve a comfortable win with a 3.2sec gap. Estonian driver Ralf Aron rounded out the podium in third, finishing 11.9sec behind Daruvala.

“The start was not ideal, but I kept my cool as I knew we were quick. Once I was ahead, I just had to make sure I made no mistakes. A lot of credit goes to the team for all the effort that they have put in,” commented Daruvala.

The Carlin racer then backed up his race win with another strong showing in Race 2, climbing from his 12th place starting position to finish on the podium, in third place. He crossed the line just behind Fabio Scherer, while Dan Ticktum stormed from 10th on the grid to win the race.

Daruvala’s third place finish in Race 2 marks his fifth appearance on the podium this season, and he now sits fifth in the drivers’ championship. The 19-year-old is enjoying his strongest weekend in the class so far, and will be starting Race 3 from fourth on the grid.

Third-party insurance for new vehicles mandatory from September 1

The Supreme Court of India has passed a judgment declaring that third-party insurance is compulsory for every new four-wheeler and two-wheeler sold in the country after September 1, 2018. The new ruling was made on July 20, 2018, in an attempt to provide relief to victims involved in vehicular accidents.

A meeting was held by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety on March 26, 2018. Here it was noted that there were about 18 crore vehicles plying on the road and only about six crore vehicles had the mandatory third-party insurance cover. In other words, 66 percent of vehicles were running on the road without any third-party insurance cover; and the victims of accidents – including those who have died and their legal representatives – were not getting compensation because vehicles were not insured.

To bypass this problem, particularly by persons who are legal representatives of victims of fatal road accidents, the Committee had detailed discussions with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), General Insurance Council, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance and the government of India.

After a detailed discussion, the Supreme Court ruled that it has made it clear that the third party insurance cover should mandatorily be for a period of three years (for cars) and five years (for two-wheelers). This may be taken and treated as a separate product. It has been left to the insurance companies to deal with comprehensive insurance policies on a separate footing. It would be at the option of the owner of the vehicle to decide which specific policy should be taken..

Commenting on the new order, said, “The recent order of Supreme Court that every new car sold should have a three year third party liability insurance cover and every new two wheeler sold should have a five year third party liability insurance cover is a welcome verdict," said K G Krishnamoorthy Rao , managing director and CEO, Future Generali India Insurance Company, while commenting on this new order. "As of now a significant percentage of cars and two wheelers are not insured for the mandatory third party insurance, because of which many times the common man who meets with a road accident involving such vehicles do not get adequate compensation. The challenge for the insurance industry to implement the order from September 1 is the readiness of the product and pricing to be approved by the regulator and time required for making changes in the IT systems of the companies.”

The last of Ducati’s large-displacement twin-cylinder sports bikes is also the most expensive (discounting the ultra-exclusive Superleggera and Desmosedici RR, of course). The Final Edition comes in a special tri-colour paint scheme with red wheels, and a titanium exhaust and an engine output of 209hp and 142Nm of torque.

2. Kawasaki Ninja H2R

Price - 69,80,000

The maddest bike in the H2 stable is also the second-most expensive bike on sale in India – and by a considerable margin. The numbers on the H2R are almost beyond belief – a stratospheric 326hp (with Ram Air) and 165Nm of torque, all from just a 998cc supercharged engine.

Fortunately (or unfortunately), the H2R isn’t a street-legal motorcycle, primarily because it comes shod with slick tyres, so buyers can use it only at the track. It’s a good thing tracks in India don’t have noise limits as yet, because if they did, the H2R would break them, too.

1. BMW HP4 Race

Price – Rs 85,00,000

Topping the list is BMW Motorrad's most exclusive production motorcycle. Priced at Rs 85 lakh (ex-showroom), the BMW HP4 Race is the most expensive motorcycle on sale in India. What makes the elusive BMW motorcycle stand out in terms of looks is its extensive use of carbon fibre. It’s the first production bike in the world to offer a mainframe made entirely of carbon fibre, which weighs just 7.8kg.

The bike also features carbon-fibre wheels and by employing lightweight materials, the HP4 Race tips the scale at just 171kg – the standard motorcycle weighs 208kg. As expected, the bike features top-shelf cycle parts and the motor has been tuned to pump out 215hp. The HP4 Race is, understandably, a track-only motorcycle and isn’t road-legal.
