2018 Toyota Crown revealed
Toyota brought out the latest generation of its flagship luxury sedan in the Japanese market. Currently in its 15th generation, the Crown is also among the first generation of cars that will be equipped with Toyota’s Data Communication Module as standard; the other car being the recently revealed Corolla Sport.
The brand’s new connected car technology offers 24x7 connectivity services focused on safety, security, comfort, and convenience based on real-time driving data. The data communication module helps connect with other cars, and infrastructure as well, to aid in safer driving. The car also gets Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 – a suite of features that includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, intelligent cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and even auto high beams.
The Crown is underpinned by a new platform, which is based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) strategy. The powertrain options include two hybrid systems and a turbo-petrol engine. The 2.5-litre petrol-hybrid system has a combined output of 226hp, the bigger 3.5-litre V6 petrol-hybrid system puts out over 359hp and is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, while the turbo-petrol engine makes 245hp and 350Nm of torque. All the powertrains have been placed lower in the body to achieve a lower center of gravity. The ;models were tested on the Nürburgring circuit during its development.
The car has a low slung nose and has a long sleek profile that runs all the way to the boot. There is also an RS variant on offer which offers 18-inch aluminum wheels, four exhaust tailpipes, a rear spoiler and black door frames. The interiors feature a clean design dashboard with dual displays. An 8-inch display sits at the back for viewing information while driving while a 7-inch screen is placed at the bottom for easier operation.
There has been no official word about the Crown coming to India; however, the all-new Corolla which is based on the same TNGA platform will make it to our country.

Audi-Airbus flying taxi gets approval from German government
Audi and Airbus’s flying taxi concept looks ready to take off in Ingolstadt, following the signing of a letter of intent by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The concept, which was shown at the Geneva motor show, features a passenger pod that can be attached either to an electric car base or quadcopter top. The autonomous vehicle can either drive itself on the road or fly itself.
Merkel’s backing will allow the project to move onto testing on the road and the sky – something that she said would help provide a solution to Germany’s growing urban traffic problem, as well as offer a boost to the technology industry.
“Flying taxis aren’t a vision any longer, they can take us off into a new dimension of mobility,” German transport minister Andreas Scheuer told Bloomberg. “They’re a huge opportunity for companies and young start-ups that already develop this technology very concretely and successfully.”
Flying taxis have become increasingly popular with tech companies because of their ability to transport passengers door to door without the need for a runway.
Uber is developing its own flying taxi with the intention of launching it in 2020. Lilium, a German start-up, is also creating its own, with hopes that it will take to the skies from 2025.

Monsoon riding: How to keep yourself and your belongings dry
Riding in the monsoons has the potential to be a lot of fun, as long as you’re well prepared. We’ve already got a long and detailed write-up on the dos and don’ts of monsoon riding and how to keep your vehicle in great shape through it. This article is more about keeping yourself and your belongings dry and safe. Water has an incredibly tenacious ability to get everywhere and complete waterproofing is quite hard to achieve on a motorcycle and can get rather expensive as well. There’s a world of high-end waterproof gear available out there for very big sums of money, but we’ll keep it simple here with affordable solutions. Let’s start with keeping yourself dry.
Personal protection
The obvious thing to begin with is a set of rain pants and a jacket. There are plenty of options out there, from cheap roadside offerings to high-end rain suits designed exclusively with motorcycles in mind. As with most things, more money will get you better results, but there are a few things you should consider when making the purchase.
First of all, the jacket and pants should fit over your riding gear, so buying a size larger helps. I much prefer to carry light and easily compressible rain gear in my backpack rather than buying riding gear with removable water-resistant liners. Waiting for the rain to arrive, then removing the gear and attaching these liners is tedious, fiddly and you’ll probably be drenched by the time it’s done. Further, once it stops raining you’ll want to get the liners off again because they make the gear hot and stuffy very quickly – meaning, more wasted time. Being able to quickly slip on and off a rain suit is far more convenient.
If you ride a scooter, a large poncho will work well at urban speeds where you won’t have to worry about it flapping around. However, on a bike, separate pants and a jacket are ideal. Also, a poncho for a pillion means lose and flapping material near the rear tyre – obviously a very bad idea. When it comes to the rain jacket, remember that zippers are always weak points in terms of waterproofing, so try to buy one with a Velcro storm-flap that securely covers the zipper. Alternatively, find one with a small zipper near the neck to facilitate easy wearing and removal. Finally, make sure the bottoms of the pants are wide enough to easily pull over your riding boots - having to remove your boots on the side of the road is a pain.
In terms of footwear, we’d highly recommend a proper set of waterproof motorcycle boots, but these can be expensive. Further, unless your waterproof boots have a high-quality/expensive breathable waterproof membrane (Gore-tex for example) they will also run quite hot in the summer heat, necessitating a separate pair of vented boots for the dry months. If this is too much for you, some brands sell waterproof covers for your existing riding boots.
And while these are a little cumbersome, they get the job done for much less money. Check these one’s out by Royal Enfield for a better idea.
When it comes to gloves, the same issues hold true as for the boots – waterproof gloves will run hot in the dry season. Bear in mind that many waterproof gloves also come with a warm lining that gets uncomfortable in our temperate climate, so find a pair that works based on your intended usage pattern. I’ve also found that water invariably makes its way through on long rides, unless you have a long gauntlet glove that’s securely covered by the rain jacket.
Device protection
Getting wet on a motorcycle is a pain, but humans don’t ruin in the rain, so there’s no real cause for worry there. The same can’t be said for all the gadgets we carry around these days and a major cause for anxiety on a motorcycle in the rain is whether all the electronics are dry and safe. For this, you want something that is completely waterproof, and here, the solutions are more focussed.
This is the point where it helps to know that ‘water-resistant’ has a very different meaning to ‘waterproof’. Water resistant bags can keep water out for a while, but it eventually makes its way through. For truly waterproof protection, you need something with a roll top closure. There are some backpacks available with this feature, but they tend to be quite expensive and even the more affordable ones from Quipco and Royal Enfield cost Rs 4,000 and upwards. Oh and in case you were wondering, in my experience, those snap-on rain covers for backpacks are unreliable over long rides and I wouldn’t recommend them. An ex-colleague who had to write off a brand new iPhone will attest to this.
Thankfully, there is an affordable and dependable fix available and it’s called a dry bag. This is basically a single compartment, sack-like bag that uses a roll-top closure. It works quite simply and you have to roll the top opening a minimum of three times and then use the snap-fit claps at either end to clip it shut. Rubber-welded or taped seams on the inside ensure that the bag stays watertight no matter the conditions or duration of exposure.
These bags come in different sizes and you want to find one that can fit into your existing backpack. There are a number of options available for around Rs 1,000 and I recently bought the Rs 1,250 Quipco AquaShield 20l dry bag. This is admittedly larger than required for daily use, but it allows the flexibility to pack an overnight change of clothes as well. We’ll have a full review out on this soon.
If it’s just your phone that you’re worried about, there are plenty of clear waterproof cases out there that allow usage of the screen and camera in the rain. In my experience, it’s a good idea to avoid the cheap unbranded ones with plastic closures available online as these are prone to breaking. Once again, the best way to go is to find something with a roll-top closure.
Dry and happy
With a little bit of clever investment, you can make sure that you and your belongings are sheltered this monsoon, freeing you to relax and enjoy some of the most beautiful times of the year to be out on a motorcycle. Happy riding!

New Audi A1 a possibility for India
German luxury carmaker Audi could bring its Mini-rivalling small car, the A1, to India. The head of Audi's India operations, Rahil Ansari, hinted at the possibility of introducing the A1 if the government relaxes import norms for luxury cars.
The government is mulling over allowing foreign carmakers to import vehicles without having them undergo homologation if the vehicles have already been certified by international testing agencies, according to a report by Times of India.
The move, which will allow automakers to import 2,500 units per annum, is reportedly aimed at encouraging local manufacturing and will enable them to test waters for their models and gauge customer response before establishing local assembly operations.
Ansari told Autocar India that he hopes the move is passed, as it will give the company a great opportunity to test the demand for its models, especially in new segments. "It is a favourable development and we hope it is passed soon because it will also allow us to give customers the choice of a wider variety of cars," he said.
The recently revealed second-generation A1 is expected to draw new and young customers to the brand in international markets with its low-slung proportions and sporty styling further accentuated by elements such as twin tailpipes, larger air inlets, and a larger rear wing.
The A1 gets an infotainment system with a 10.1-inch MMI touchscreen on the higher trims, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and wireless charging. Powertrain options include a 95hp, 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol, and a 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol units making up to 200hp. Audi is not offering a diesel engine.
The introduction of the A1 could heighten activity in the luxury hatchback segment in India, which currently has models such as the Mini range, which has seen decent success, as well as the VW GTI.
Would you be willing to pay upwards of Rs 20 lakh for an Audi hatchback? Let us know in the comments section below.

Truth and dare
Since this is a family magazine, we can’t tell you about the bet that set the wheels rolling on this road trip. Long story short: our two protagonists, Ouseph and Rohan, had a bet and Ouseph lost. So, Rohan got to choose the mode of transport for this trip and Ouseph got to pick the route. There’s more to this.
See, Rohan has lived all his life in Mumbai, dresses stylishly even when he goes to the loo and pays serious attention to his appearance. He isn’t very familiar with the outdoors, thinks camping is for gypsies and cannot imagine answering nature’s call in the great wide open. Ouseph knows this and decides that it is high time Rohan got some grime under his fingernails.
Cut to a tiny Himalayan town call Bairagarh in Himachal Pradesh. Ouseph caught the bus to get here and Rohan arrived late at night in his chosen vehicle – the new Renault Captur. The plan is to drive 30km up to the top of the 14,000ft Sach Pass, continue down into Pangi valley and find a nice place to camp. Ouseph’s been to Pangi valley before and knows a couple beautiful spots they can go set up camp. The only problem is that he knows that the roads ahead are difficult and narrow. You see, Pangi valley is still rather off the tourist map, so the roads aren’t as well-maintained as the roads around Manali and Shimla. The dangers that they face ahead include (but are not limited to) freak landslides, tyre-slicing rocks, boulder fields, possible snow storms and drops big enough to give an eagle serious vertigo.
Ouseph is a bit sceptical when he sees the front-wheel-drive Captur in the morning. The past few times he’s been here, he’s come this way in a four-wheel-drive vehicle and he’s not sure if the Captur will make the road. Rohan, on the other hand, is fully confident of the Captur’s abilities. Ouseph rolls his eyes but decides that this can be an interesting challenge. In the boot is a two-man tent, two folding chairs and the road ahead promises treacherous terrain and real adventure. What better way to find out if both Rohan and the Captur are made of strong stuff.
The road up to Sach Pass is narrow at places, has deep sand in others and, runs quite steep, up to the top. If all goes well, they expect to be at another remote village called Killar, deep inside Pangi valley. Ouseph knows a good spot above Killar that has running water nearby and flat ground to pitch a tent on.
They cross the Satrundi checkpost on the way up to Sach and are immediately thrown into the deep end. The road is narrow and climbs through dense pine forest and somewhere along the way is when they run into a hoard of taxis bringing tourists back from the ‘snow point’ just below Sach Pass. Ouseph has to reverse a fair bit to where the road is wider and he loves the Captur’s reverse camera. For two cars to pass each other on this road, you need to use every inch of available space and the reverse camera helps Ouseph do just that. The taxis get through and the boys continue the climb to Sach.
Rohan gloats a little as Ouseph comments on the strong on-boost torque of the Captur. He can see Ouseph slowly falling for the Captur’s many charms. They climb steadily past 10,000ft and Ouseph knows that all cars lose power up here, so he is careful to not lose momentum and keep the turbo spinning away happily. On a couple of occasions, they are forced to stop and assess the ground they have to traverse and it is here that the Captur’s hill-start assist makes starting off on steep inclines easy. Ouseph comments about how the Captur makes this difficult terrain look rather simple.
Rohan marvels at the landscape as they climb above the treeline while Ouseph can’t believe how the Captur sails over big rocks that have fallen on the road. See, on most other roads, the road is wide enough to drive around obstacles. Not up here. Up here, there simply isn’t enough space between the mountain side and a free fall is guaranteed if a wheel is placed wrong.
Also, good ground clearance is essential and the Captur’s 210mm means Ouseph can confidently sail over rocks and deep ruts left by trucks without the fear of gouging out vital bits of the Captur.
They go through a couple of streams fed by glacial melt, swing a left through the ice tunnel that remains from last winter and get to a small temple at the top, with an even smaller sign board that says Sach Pass. Ouseph is in wonder of the ease with which the Captur made it up here but he knows the road down the pass is even more treacherous. A couple of celebratory selfies later, Ouseph starts to get nervous.
The weather up on a pass is very unpredictable and can change in minutes. A dark grey cloud is rolling in and the temperature drops as wind rushes through the pass. They retreat into the comfort of the Captur’s warm climate-controlled cabin and head to lower altitudes.
A tight turning radius and ABS makes the descent through this road’s slippery hairpins a cinch. Killar is just 40km away but the boulder fields on the way forces them to slow down. Rohan has gone into a trance, mesmerised by the desolate beauty of Pangi valley. It is his first time here.
The Captur easily makes its way down the pass, a small white speck in an immense moonscape. Sharp rocks that can easily make mince meat out of the tyres have to be driven over carefully but otherwise, the Captur takes everything the road throws up in its stride.
Rohan says he feels like they are driving through a set of The Lord of the Rings and he’s been clicking away on his phone. They drive through a couple of waterfalls that fall onto the road, get pelted by a few pebbles falling downthe mountainside (no damage, luckily) and descend below the treeline.
They reach Killar just in time to pick up a few supplies, make their way to the helipad and set up camp with visual aid provided by the Captur’s powerful headlights.
Hot chai is brewed and they sit back and take in the peace and quiet that you get only in areas where there is no cell phone network.
Ouseph tells Rohan that he is impressed with the Captur. It has taken a beating and come out unscathed. He also gushes about how comfortably the Captur brought them here. He says that he is usually very tired by the time he gets to Killar because of how tough the road is but this time he’s absolutely fine.
Rohan goes on to say how unbelievably beautiful Pangi valley is. He says that they should have more bets like
SACH PASS
Sach Pass, on the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas is the 12th-highest pass in the country at an altitude of 14,500ft. Located in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district, it connects Chamba Valley with Pangi Valley and is open only from June to mid-October. So Pangi valley effectively remains cut-off from the rest of the country for the rest of the year. The road conditions at the pass are extreme. It’s narrow and unmetalled, with treacherous drops scaling hundreds of feet. Avalanches and heavy snowfalls can sometimes block some sections of the road and can be extremely dangerous due to frequent patches of ice. This is not a road for a novice driver.this simply because he knows that everybody won. Ouseph agrees wholeheartedly. End of story.

Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R, ZX-10RR now assembled in India
We had broken the news about Kawasaki’s plans to locally assemble the Ninja ZX-10R and the ZX-10RR only a few months ago. Now, Kawasaki India has confirmed the same and, as a result, both the superbikes have witnessed a massive price drop. The locally assembled Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R has been priced at Rs 12.80 lakh while the Ninja ZX-10RR carries a sticker price of Rs 16.10 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). In comparison, the imported (as a CBU) Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R retailed for Rs 18.8 lakh, while the ZX-10RR was priced at Rs 21.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The revision in pricing means that the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R is the most affordable litre-class superbike on sale in India, upstaging the 2018 Honda CBR1000RR which retails for Rs 14.78 lakh (ex-showroom, India) since the drop in CBU duties.
The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R is available in only the KRT edition colour scheme, while the ZX-10RR is available in matte black only. Both the prices are introductory and will be valid till the end of July. The ZX-10R and the 10RR are the most powerful and expensive motorcycles from the Japanese brand’s portfolio to be assembled in our country. Both the motorcycles will be CKD imports and will be assembled at Kawasaki’s Chakan plant. Bookings for both the models are open across all Kawasaki India dealerships. Kawasaki also said that only certain number of units of the superbikes will be available on sale, but it hasn’t shared the exact number of bikes available. It did confirm that fewer units of the Ninja ZX-10RR will be put on sale as global production is limited.
The ZX-10R is among the quickest and more popular litre-class superbikes on sale globally. Powering it is a 998cc, in-line four motor pumping out 200hp at 13,000rpm and 113.5Nm of torque at 11,500rpm. It features a six-speed gearbox and a quickshifter comes as standard fitment. Kawasaki has also loaded the Ninja ZX-10R with electronic goodies such as traction control(S-KTRC), multi-level power modes, launch control (KLCM), ABS control (KIBS), cornering management (KCMF) and engine braking function (KEBC) – all of which are controlled by an inertial measuring unit (IMU).
The ZX-10RR is a more track-focussed version of the standard superbike and is offered only as a single-seater. On the mechanical front, the superbike gets a modified cylinder head, complete with a higher lift on the camshaft, along with reinforced crankcases for better reliability. The ZX-10RR comes equipped with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tyres, which are wrapped around lighter 7-spoke Marchesini forged aluminium alloy wheels. It also features Brembo M50 brake calipers along with grooved rotors and a radial master cylinder, for better braking performance on the racetrack.
Speaking about this exciting new development, Yutaka Yamashita, Managing Director, India Kawasaki Motors, said “The Ninja ZX-10R & Ninja ZX-10RR have a unique engineering heritage with a very advanced technology. Our newly established R&D played a vital role in making local assembly of the Ninja ZX-10R and Ninja ZX-10RR successful.”

KTM 790 Adventure R prototype revealed
When it rains, it pours. Hours after bringing you fresh spy shots of KTM’s upcoming 390 Adventure, we’ve received news of an officially revealed prototype of the 790 Adventure R.
The motorcycle has been spotted as a test mule in the past, and a prototype bike has now been displayed at KTM’s European Adventure Rally, its annual event for Adventure owners. The event was held in Sardinia and the 790 Adventure was introduced to a select few KTM Adventure owners by Dakar finisher Chris Birch.
The prototype features the side-slung low-mounted fuel tank extensions that we saw on the earlier prototype. KTM says that it has implemented this design in order to attain an optimum centre of gravity.
Other highlights include the 799cc parallel-twin LC8c motor shared with the 790 Duke, which KTM says has been tuned for a wider spread of torque, fully adjustable long-travel WP suspension at both ends, a claimed range of more than 400km, full-LED lighting and lean angle-sensitive rider assists.
The motorcycle on display featured wire-spoke wheels (21-inch front, 18-inch rear) and knobby off-road tyres. The braking setup consists of twin discs at the front being bitten by radially-mounted 4-piston calipers, backed up by a single disc at the rear. Cornering ABS at both ends will be standard, along with an off-road mode. A beak-type front fender, along with the upswept exhaust end-canister, large bash-plate and tall stance make this a purposeful looking motorcycle, ready to take on any terrain.
We expect a production-ready version of this motorcycle to be revealed at the either EICMA in November or Intermot in October, later this year.

Porsche slashes all-time Nurburgring lap record by nearly a minute
Earlier today, Porsche driver Timo Bernhard and a heavily modified 919 Evo Le Mans racer lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 5min 19.545sec, obliterating the earlier record by 51.584sec. The previous record of 6min 11.13sec was set by Stefan Bellof, behind the wheel of a Porsche 956 Group C race car during the qualifying for the 1,000km race in 1983.
Porsche previously hinted that it will return to the 12.93-mile (20.8km) circuit for the record run after speculation swirled about the record attempt. In a tweet showing photos of 919 Evo at the circuit, Porsche said: "Well, Timo Bernhard loves that track... Perhaps he comes again."
The 919 Evo is based on Porsche’s successful Le Mans 24 Hours racer, which won the event last year before the firm withdrew from endurance racing. Porsche and Bernhard broke the record earlier today, with a time of 5min 24.375sec, but a subsequent attempt smashed the record once again.
Freed of the need to meet the class regulations, Porsche dramatically reworked the 919 for a ‘Tribute Tour’, to produce 53 percent more downforce, while reducing its weight by 39kg to 849kg. Also reworked is the hybrid powertrain – so the 2.0-litre V4 engine produces 720hp, with an extra 439hp coming from an electric motor.
As part of the Tribute Tour, Neel Jani used the 919 Hybrid to lap the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium in a record 1min 41.770secs, eclipsing the record of 1min 42.553sec set by Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes during the qualifying for the 2017 Belgian Grand Prix.

Red Bull Kart Fight returns to India in 2018
After a successful 1st edition last year, the Red Bull Kart Fight is back in India for its 2018 edition. The national-level amateur karting tournament will be held in Mumbai, Gurugram, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Baroda.
The format of the tournament is a little roundabout, so stay with us through this next bit:
One-day qualifiers will be held in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Baroda. The winner of the one-day qualifiers from each of these cities will progress directly to the national finals.
Meanwhile, city qualifiers will be conducted for three months in Mumbai and Gurugram, separately. Simultaneously, each city will host a round of the city finals at the beginning of each respective month. Each of these rounds will feature the top 20 drivers from the city qualifiers held in the previous month.
At the end of three months, the top three drivers from each of the city finals (nine drivers from Mumbai, nine from Gurugram) will then battle it out in the national finals, along with the four winners of the one-day qualifiers – a total of 22 drivers from across the country.
The national winner will get an all-expense-paid trip to the Formula One season finale at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi, to be held on November 25, 2018. Last year’s edition of the event was won by Monish Jain, the son of a diamond merchant from Mumbai, who also won the trip to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Those interested in participating can head to Smaaash in Mumbai and Gurgaon; Meco Kartopia in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai; and Erda’s Speedway in Baroda. The standings will be decided by timing systems that are accurate to 1/100th of a second.

ABB sees big potential in EV charging infrastructure in India
Swiss engineering major ABB is bullish on the growth opportunity in India’s electric vehicle charging market. The company is also keen to harness its strong foothold in solar energy generation in India to provide not just EV chargers but a clean charging ecosystem altogether.
“We’re very strong in India on the solar energy side and we can look at an EV charging infrastructure from a complete ecosystem point of view. The strategy is to produce renewable energy that can be consumed without emissions,” Frank Muehlon, MD, EV Charging Infrastructure, ABB Ltd, told Autocar India in an interview. Fifty percent of solar power generated in India passes through ABB’s inverters, according to the company.
While EV adoption in India is still at a nascent phase, studies suggest growth could accelerate on the back of rising consumer awareness and a push from the government, which aims to have over 30 percent of all vehicles electrified by 2030.
ABB’s Indian arm is running pilot projects in EV charging infrastructure with some automakers. This includes an EV charging station at Rohtang (near Manali) and in New Delhi. ABB recently installed a fast-charging station — ABB Terra 53 — at government think-tank NITI Aayog’s office in Delhi, which can fully charge an EV in 30min. Globally, ABB also has advanced EV charging solutions such as flash-charging technology that charges a bus in a remarkable 20sec, and a fast charger for cars that gives a 200km range in eight minutes.
The company has the capability to locally manufacture EV charging equipment at its Bengaluru plant. While it is hopeful about a pick-up in demand for chargers, it is awaiting a formal directive from the government on various aspects of e-mobility, starting with charging standards, to decide its future strategy.
Muehlon believes the CCS (Combined Charging System) format would be ideal for India. “For India, it might be better to align with the CCS standard since it is well accepted by automakers including most Japanese ones,” he said.
Notably, in a global context, Jaguar Land Rover CEO, Ralf Speth, stressed the need to have targets for charging infrastructure. Talking at the ABB Technology Forum in Zurich, Speth said, “One should question why there are no targets for the charging infrastructure programme, especially because they go hand in hand with emission targets. Customers expect charging to be as convenient as refuelling. And that’s not unreasonable.”
ABB says it has the technology to bring electricity from any power plant to any consumption point. “Individual electric mobility is one of the fastest growing phenomenons for us from a technology and market perspective. ABB is ideally suited to be the partner of choice for countries, cities and car companies to provide infrastructure solutions to make e-mobility happen,” ABB Group CEO, Ulrich Spiesshofer said.
In fact, the company has partnered with Formula E as it believes the all-electric race series holds many opportunities in testing key electrification technologies which the company can be a part of.
In conversation with Frank Muehlon, MD, Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure, ABB Ltd.
On the key requirements for setting up an efficient charging infrastructure.
One of the absolute core requirements is clarity on the charging standards. There are just too many standards out there such as the CCS, CHAdeMO, Tesla’s Supercharger and GB/T in China. This makes it difficult to have the right infrastructure for the car. So, it wouldn’t be ideal if India comes up with its own standard. One of the key ground rules is to not reinvent the wheel.
The other ground rule is that charging stations need to be accessible. So when you come to charge, not only does the plug work but you are authorised to charge, and the payment and the billing work. The rule is that you don’t fragment it too much.
The third crucial requirement is safety. Charging stations are equipment with very high power that you give in the hands of the consumer. Safety provisions need to be stipulated for EV charging stations. To have harsh requirements on that is also very important.
Lastly, the whole grid situation needs to be looked at and ensured that the power is really there. It doesn’t help if you have a capable piece of equipment but the grid doesn’t support it. So it’s all about the whole ecosystem.
On the costs and billing for the charging network.
At the end, you pay for the energy you consume and you can do that in two ways: pay by Kwh or in some countries that do not allow non-utilities to sell energy, you pay on the basis of time. The best way of doing it is usually by RFID or QR code. However, automakers are now trying to adopt a more flexible approach called Plug&Charge. You just plug in and the communication between car and charger happens automatically. The user is identified and then it’s billed back because you have the data related to the car, including your payment details.

India-bound Audi A4 facelift revealed
Audi has given the A4 a minor refresh in its design, and it now comes with an enlarged standard equipment list, though there are no mechanical changes. The facelift for the fifth-generation A4 (the pre-facelift model sells in India) is expected to arrive in India some time in 2019.
Design-based changes include slightly sharper features, bigger side skirts and a new grille design. The top-spec S variant gets a more prominent rear diffuser and larger 19-inch alloy wheels, though lower trims stick with 17-inch or 18-inch wheels. A new Turbo Blue colour is expected to be exclusively available with cars in Black Edition specification.
Standard kit has increased across the range. All trims also now get a 7-inch infotainment screen and satellite navigation as standard. The entry-level variant now comes with a multi-function steering wheel and electric-folding mirrors while the Sport models feature four-way lumbar adjustment for the front seats and auto-folding door mirrors. S line and Black Edition models add high beam assist headlamps to this list.
The current A4 that retails in India is priced between Rs 41.47 lakh and Rs 46.94 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and rivals the likes of the BMW 3-series, Mercedes-Benz C-class (whose facelift is scheduled to arrive in October this year) and the Volvo S60 (the next-gen model is expected in 2019).

Audi delays e-tron SUV reveal
The Audi Summit – which was to be held in Brussels on August 30, 2018 – has been indefinitely postponed. As a result of this, the scheduled launch of the Audi e-tron electric SUV has also been postponed. The brand’s first electric SUV was initially due to be revealed at the event at Audi's Brussels facility, where it is planned to be built.
This news comes in the wake of the Audi CEO Rupert Stadler being arrested, a week ago on allegations of fraud and false advertising.
“Organisational issues” have been blamed for the postponement of the summit. This implies that the e-tron reveal is likely to be delayed and could take place at the rescheduled summit; which will now be held in the US – although the date and location have not yet been officially announced.
The e-tron is set to go up against a fleet of premium mid-sized electric SUVs like the Jaguar I-Pace, the BMW iX3 and the Mercedes-Benz EQC.
Previously, the e-tron was expected to be the second amongst these to reach the European market. This delay could now reduce the breathing space between the launch of the e-tron and the EQC and iX3 – both of which are due to be unveiled in 2020.

Indian FTR 1200 set for reveal in 2019
Indian Motorcycle has finally announced that it will make a road-legal version of the company’s successful FTR 750 flat-track racer. While a formal release date has not been set, the company suggests that the bike will go on sale internationally in 2019. Called the FTR 1200, it will take inspiration, design and performance cues from the race bike.
Indian say this move comes in response to months of speculation and demand for a street version of the company’s FTR 750. The FTR 750 is Indian’s purpose-built flat track racer that won the American Flat Track professional racing series in 2017. Last year, the American manufacturer also built the FTR1200 Custom, a one-off build that did the rounds at global motorcycle shows. The Custom bike was powered by the company’s 1,133cc motor that makes 94hp and 97Nm of torque.
Indian is yet to reveal the road-legal FTR 1200’s specifications, but the company say it will embody a flat tracker style, housed in a trellis frame and be powered by a new V-twin engine.
Indian Motorcycle sells almost all (barring a few Bagger models) of its bikes in India, we expect the upcoming FTR to follow suit. The FTR 1200 will also likely be Indian’s sportiest offering yet and is sure to draw in a new customer base.

Review: Tesla Model X P100D review, test drive
What is it?
Disruption is the buzzword in today’s times and that’s exactly what Elon Musk-led Tesla brought to the automotive world. Established carmakers were pipped to the post by Tesla's high-end electric vehicles that people would want to buy. Of the models on sale is the Model X – an all-electric, full-size, seven-seat SUV that can humble supercars with its performance. And that’s in standard guise. With us is the maddest one of the lot – the Model X P100D. Powered by a 500kW (about 670hp) motor, the P100D blasts from 0-100kph in a blistering 3.1sec (claimed), with a top speed of 250kph.
What’s it like on the outside?
One look at this car and there’s no mistaking it for anything else on the road. It’s unique and it doesn’t have a butch SUV-like presence – instead, it appears to be a large hatchback, one that’s over 5m in length and wider than an Audi Q7. The styling is clean with minimal lines, and the lower half of the car gets black plastic cladding for that SUV-like styling. Other highlights are its large 22-inch multi-spoke black wheels, frameless windows for the front doors and rear doors that go up like a falcon’s wing. Not only do these facilitate easy ingress/egress due to a wide cavity, they require very little room on the sides, hence these can be opened in really tight spaces too. Approach the car and the doors can be set to open automatically, and they shut when you put your foot on the brake.
What’s it like on the inside?
'Minimalist' best describes this Tesla’s interiors. The white colour theme looks posh, and while the quality of bits is acceptable, it isn’t as good as an Audi or even a Volvo XC90. There are just two physical buttons on the dashboard, one for the glovebox and one for the hazard lights. The gear lever is positioned on the stalks like a modern Mercedes and everything else is controlled via a huge vertical 17-inch touchscreen. It’s a bit overwhelming at first, with so many controls and functions to speak of, but you get used to it soon and the touch-sensitivity is one of the best we’ve experienced so far. It can be distracting to use while on the move, so it helps to some extent that there are eight cameras all around and radar-based technology to keep you from veering off course.
What’s nice is that despite the massive greenhouse area – with the largest panoramic windscreen in a production car – the cabin was cooled very quickly on a sunny afternoon. The seats, although appear to be slim, are very comfy and supportive. The car I drove was a six-seater, (there’s also a five and seven-seating configuration available); so the second row had two bucket seats which were electrically adjustable. There’s ample space here. The entire battery pack is placed beneath the floor, so there’s no central hump and the floor is flat. Press a button and the middle row seats slide forward, giving you access to the third row. The last row can accommodate adults; however, it feels a bit dark here due to the large middle row seats and small quarter glasses.
In terms of features, the Model X gets all-LED headlamps, 22-inch wheels, electric doors, keyless entry and go, 17-inch touchscreen infotainment, electric seats and radar-based tech including adaptive cruise control, pilot assist, emergency braking, etc. A really cool feature on the infotainment screen is that the SUV can be programmed to do a bit of a dance by flapping its doors and mirrors, with blinking LED lights and music played via the speakers adding to the drama.
What’s it like to drive?
We didn’t have the opportunity of a full day of driving in the Tesla Model X, but even in the little time with it, it felt far removed in character to any internal combustion engine car. Of course, the first thing is the sound or lack of it. There’s absolute silence when starting off, and because of this, road and tyre noise creeps inside the cabin. It moves effortlessly with the gentlest of inputs. Throttle responses are instant and the electric motor is extremely quick to respond. On the few occasions where I got to flex my right foot, the immediate power on tap literally pinned me to the seat and this 2.5-tonne SUV lunged forward like a scalded cat. You have to be very careful with throttle inputs to just keep within the speed limit. To put things into perspective, the way the Model X built speeds was similar to how a 610hp Audi R8 V10 accelerated – power delivery is that brutal. Then, its electric motor can drive up to 465km on a single charge (depending on driving style), which takes roughly 6-8 hours, so it’s possible to use the Tesla Model X as an inter-city commuter without range anxiety getting the better of you.
The Model X’s steering is light and consistent, although a bit large in diameter. And because the regenerative braking function was on, the car shed speed the moment I lifted off the accelerator; so I was predominantly driving it with just one pedal, without any real need to use the brake pedal often. The ride though is firm and it crashed over some sharp potholes, but it wasn’t uncomfortable at any time despite the large wheels and low-profile tyres.
Should I buy one?
Tesla has spoken of coming to India and there has been the odd sighting of a privately imported Model X in India too, but the fact is you can’t buy one for the moment. And that is a shame.
As a car, the Tesla Model X is quite the package. It stands out for its looks, has green credentials you can boast of and even has the performance to smoke a supercar or two at the drag strip – all that while offering seating for up to seven passengers. Oh, and there’s self-driving tech too, though we were happy to keep the hands on the wheel. With all options checked, at 2,20,000 CAD (approximately Rs 1.14 crore), this Tesla Model X is a car from the future, on sale now.

2018 MG Live classic car meet
Few brands are as well-connected with their audience as MG. Predominantly a maker of sporting cars, MG was born out of the then-super-successful English carmaker Morris Motors. Initially only a service outfit, Morris Garages (MG), soon morphed into a maker of sportscars when the man in charge, Cecil Kimber, realised he could sell specially modified versions of Morris cars for a bigger profit.
The first MG, way back in 1924, was a sportier version of the famous Morris Bullnose. The first ‘proper’ MG, however, was the M-Type (or the Midget), a car that pioneered the classic upright-radiator, bicycle-fendered lines. This is the car I search for first on Silverstone’s grassy infield, where most of the MG Live event is held. One of the first genuinely affordable sportscars to be manufacutred, the M-Type was produced using humble but modified mechanical bits from the 1928 Morris Minor. It was a delight to drive, and MG even made a supercharged version that enjoyed a lot of sporting success. A long line of successors followed – C-Type, D-Type, F-Type and the famous K-Type Magnette, the latter primarily used for racing.
A new version of the Midget, known as the TA, was introduced in 1936 and that too was followed by a long line of successors such as the TB, TC and TD. The T-Type, just like its predecessors, was very popular among Royal Air Force pilots of that time, and many of the later versions were imported into India, as well. What I didn’t quite realise was the bewildering array of variants the traditional MG was produced in. MG Live was a sort of voyage of discovery.
One of the highlights of the trip for me was riding shotgun in a TF around the Silverstone circuit with someone who had raced one for years. Don’t let the bicycle-thin tyres, slim fenders, uptight body work and vintage grille fool you – the TF is surprisingly rapid around the circuit, and the car hangs on to corners with a fair amount of resolve. “Gets the fundamentals right,” says its owner, John, above the wind noise, as we carve up Maggots and Becketts.
The evolution to the lower-slung and very attractive MGA followed in 1955. What the stunning lines and immaculate body work however hide is a true sporting intent that’s born of years and years of track work; these cars are a delight to drive, despite their humble 1,600cc engines and mechanical components.
Right next to the line-up of MGAs (1955-1962) were the even more agile new Midgets (1961-1979), the super-successful MGBs (1962-1980) with their slightly recessed headlights, and the stunning Pininfarina-designed coupés or GTs (1965-1980). The GT also came with some seriously powerful motors. The MGC GT, for example, got a 150hp, 3.0-litre straight-six; even Prince Charles had one he drove himself.
Then in 1973, MG took it to the next level by shoehorning the Buick-based Rover V8 into the engine bay. It helped that this was the lightest mass-production V8 around at the time. What made them a delight to drive was that some cars had upwards of 200hp.
What also added immensely to the appeal of the MG Live event was the carnival-like atmosphere and the race weekend-like environment. There were stalls selling parts, old workshop manuals, models and even full cars. How about a clean-looking MGF for just £2,000?
A race would happen every hour, and for those interested, there were food stalls, a stage for bands, and talks by MG experts from the MG Car Club. It was estimated that there were 3500 MGs at Silverstone during the weekend, with more than 10,000 club members in attendance – and that’s apart from the massive crowd.
Boring old Morris, one of the biggest carmakers at the time, sure did redeem itself by building the MG brand, all from regular mechanical bits. Come on Maruti, there’s even plenty of money to be made here.
MG IN INDIA
MG may have started life as an offshoot of Morris in the UK, but the brand today belongs to Chinese carmaker SAIC. Associated with both GM and VW in China, Shanghai Automotive (SAIC) is one of the world’s most successful carmakers. In 2017, the group, through its JVs and its own brands, produced 6.9 million vehicles – more than twice the total volume of cars sold in India. This, of course, gives the group massive financial muscle, something it will use to the fullest when it makes its entry into India as MG. The first vehicle expected to hit the roads in the first half of 2019 will be a re-engineered version of the Baojun 530 SUV, a Toyota Fortuner-sized vehicle that MG is likely to sell at the price of a Hyundai Creta.
ACTION STATIONS
One of the highlights of MG Live was a stunt show by driver Russ Swift. Now 67, Russ still has all the energy of a spring chicken. His enthusiasm is just infectious and he’s forever doing something crazy behind the wheel; handbrake turns, driving on two wheels, getting the audience to participate. We even got a ride in the back of the ZS. . . while it was on two wheels!
